Qatar Airways Airbus A340-600 Fleet List

Current Qatar Airways Airbus A340-600 Routes

Qatar Airways ordered four or the four engined long-haul Airbus A340-600 at the 2004 Paris Air Show with options for a further six.

On arrival the aircraft were configured in a Three Class 8F/42J/216Y layout with dedicated lounge areas for First and Business Class passengers.

The on board lounges did not last long and the aircraft were reconfigured early in their careers into the current 8F/42J/256Y configuration.

The A340-600s were the first aircraft in the Qatar Airways fleet to be delivered wearing the large logo/large oryx livery which also featured titles on the underside of the aircraft. The in-flight entertainment system allowed Qatar Airways to feature live to air television for the first time.

Qatar Airways attitude to the A340-600 changed rapidly. When it received its first A340-600 on 20 September 2006 CEO Akbar Al Baker stated, “This is a wonderful aircraft that excels in comfort and efficiency and I am sure our customers will have a thoroughly enjoyable flying experience on our long-haul routes. We are flying the A340-600 on selected services between Dubai and Doha and onwards to London Heathrow and, in future, Paris, Osaka and the US east coast”

However by 2009 he  expressed his disappointment with the A340-600s in comparison to the Boeing 777 stating “if I could I would throw them away. These planes are not efficient at all”.

It was therefore not surprising that the six options were never taken up and the fleet peaked at four aircraft.

In 2009 the airline used an Airbus A340-600 to fly from London Gatwick - Doha using a mixture of kerosine and synthetic gas-to-liquid fuel

In truth the A340-600 was rapidly overtaken in terms of economics by the Boeing 777-300ER and Qatar Airways has never used the aircraft on the longhaul routes where it performs best.

In 2011 all four members of the fleet visited Dublin for repaint into the large logo/medium oryx livery.
